It’s picking season at Christian Nachtwey’s organic orchard in western Germany and laborers are loading their carts with ripe red Elstar apples, ready to be shipped to European supermarkets.

But Nachtwey’s farm is also reaping a second harvest: Many of the apple trees grow beneath solar panels that have been producing bountiful electricity during this year’s unusually sun-rich summer, while providing the fruit below with much-needed shade.

Yotta Energy will use the $1.23M grant from the CEC for solar & storage project to address energy inequality in lower-income areas.

Panel-level battery maker Yotta Energy has been award a $1.23 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to develop a solar and storage system to address energy inequality in lower-income areas. The project will include battery backup for a 11-story multifamily housing complex located in Santa Ana, California. In addition to economic benefits, the project will also examine reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improvements to the surrounding environment, and implications to the existing utility grid by adding solar + storage in a low-income community.

“Our state has long been dedicated to introducing and integrating renewable energy, but as lower-income areas lagged behind in adoption due to a lack of resources, these communities have experienced elevated air pollution levels,” said CEC Chair David Hochschild “We look forward to working with Yotta Energy on this project to demonstrate the viability of these installations and how we can replicate similar types across the state.”

A team of scientists have designed an automatic pond aerator powered by pv panels - giving shrimp farmers access to sustainable energy

The traditional aerators used in shrimp farming require a substantial power source – without it, shrimp production isn’t as effective or efficient. To help address this issue, the Community Empowerment Real Work Lecture (KKN PM) team from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) created a photovoltaic-based aerator to strengthen the farmers’ production efficiency.

PM I KKN team leader Putu Eka Widya Pratama SSi MSc RWTH says that aerators are essential to provide oxygen supplies to farmed shrimp as they develop. The lecturer, who also goes by Eka, explains that his team chose Gunung Anyar Tambak Village, Surabaya, to implement the innovation because it is developing its own shrimp farming industry and is expected to become a digital village by developing renewable energy.

Tiger Brands says onsite renewable energy solutions will be installed at 35 manufacturing sites across South Africa by 2030.

South African consumer goods giant and its largest food manufacturer, Tiger Brands, will install solar power at its manufacturing sites. Tiger Brands has also been implementing energy efficiency initiatives to maximize efforts with the aim of reducing the company’s reliance on the national grid and minimize impact on the environment. Tiger Brands’ portfolio includes key staples such as maize meal, rice, pasta, and flour, and also spans a wide variety of products such as beverages, canned foods, sea food, baby food, and toiletries.

Tiger Brands says that the rollout will start soon and will be part of a multi-million-rand investment with the goal to have 65% of the business’ electricity requirements at a manufacturing level across South Africa sourced from sustainable energy solutions by 2030.  The rollout will involve the procurement of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in the C&I solar sector and will also include other other renewable energy options.

Porsche plans to build a solar power microgrid at its US headquarters in Atlanta, reducing its annual carbon emissions by 3.2 million pounds

Apparently, solar power is hot right now.

Porsche said Monday that it plans to build and operate a solar power microgrid at its U.S. headquarters in Atlanta, reducing its annual carbon emissions by 3.2 million pounds. The news came days after Ford announced what it called the largest-ever renewable energy purchase from a utility in the U.S., to power its electricity supply in Michigan with renewable energy.

The installation of Porsche’s microgrid, an on-site electrical network that harnesses power from solar panels, will begin in September and conclude in 2023. The renewable energy project is part of a $50 million development at the Porsche Experience Center campus in Atlanta.

A 230MW battery energy storage system from NextEra Energy Resources has come online in California

A 230MW battery energy storage system (BESS) from NextEra Energy Resources, part of a large solar-plus-storage project, has come online in California.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which manages the land on which the 94-acre project is located in Riverside County, announced the start of commercial operations on the Desert Sunlight Battery Energy Storage System yesterday (16 August).

The 230MW BESS project adjoins the existing Desert Sunlight Solar Farm and will store renewable energy generated by the Farm and shift it to peak demand hours.

The Public Service Commission approved a long-term power purchase agreement in partnership with Invenergy.

A 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed by the Washington D.C. Public Service Commission for renewable energy to serve a target quantity of 5% of the standard offer service (SOS) electricity supply load beginning in December 2024. The agreement is the result of a pilot program to procure renewable energy through long-term PPAs for electricity generation sourced by solar and wind located in the PJM interconnection region.

The agreement, signed with developer Invenergy, covers the sale of energy, renewable energy credits, and capacity for a 15 year term. The PPA features levelized pricing for approximately 154,000 MWh of electricity per year, representing 73 MW, or 29% of Invenergy’s solar project capacity.

A bill to allow renters and low-income Californians to access renewable energy has passed the State Senate Appropriations Committee.

A bill to allow renters and low-income Californians to access renewable energy by subscribing to community solar projects passed the State Senate Appropriations Committee Thursday.

Assembly Bill 2316 would enable direct access to solar to people who currently don’t have any way to get it.

By getting through the appropriations committee before the deadline this week, the bill could be approved this year, rather than becoming a two-year bill.

The small town of Onslow, Western Australia, is now powered almost entirely by renewable energy, and the utility behind that project wants to roll out the same tech across the state.

State-owned utility company Horizon Power said today that it will deploy distributed energy management system (DERMS) technology that helps coordinate the use of different resources like rooftop solar PV, battery storage and electric vehicles (EVs).

In the demonstration project at Onslow, the entire town ran on renewable energy and battery storage for a period of about an hour-and-a-half last year, thanks to a microgrid system which allowed it to operate as a self-contained electricity grid.
