Solar power capacity in the US has grown from just 0.34 GW in 2008 to an estimated 97.2G W today, providing enough energy to 18 million homes.

The U.S. has plans to expand its solar energy market exponentially in support of its optimistic climate change policies. The country has already established several widescale solar projects, and with the introduction of the recent Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), renewable energy companies are being provided with the funding and tax cuts needed to encourage more rapid expansion of a variety of green energy projects. With a massive solar pipeline over the next few years, the U.S. will soon become a regional solar power hub.

The solar power capacity in the U.S. has grown from just 0.34 GW in 2008 to an estimated 97.2 gigawatts (GW) today, providing enough energy to power 18 million homes. However, at present, just 3 percent of the country’s electricity comes from solar photovoltaics (PV) and concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP), demonstrating the potential to expand the industry much further.

Germany’s Liontron can prepare 300 cups of coffee a day from the PV modules and storage tech on its bicycles for beverage vendors.

Espresso, cappuccino, flat whites – you need a lot of electricity to prepare coffee. And it is sometimes not easy for the operators of mobile coffee shops to obtain energy in public places.

Germany battery specialist Liontron has developed a solution for this: a mobile coffee-shop bike that uses built-in lithium-iron phosphate batteries to provide enough electricity to prepare coffee all day long. Two PV modules with outputs of 200 W each charge the batteries.

Renewable energy giant EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) today said it has clinched a deal to sell the output of a 200-MW solar park it plans to build in the US state of California.

The company, which is the renewables arm of Portuguese utility EDP (ELI:EDP), will sell the electricity under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The name of the power off-taker was not disclosed in the press statement.

The proposed solar photovoltaic (PV) project, the name of which was not specified, will be integrated with 150 MW of battery storage capacity. The complex is due to be fully commissioned in 2024.

Transparent solar cells have taken another step toward becoming a reality. Here come windows that can generate power from the sun.

Transparent solar cells, which have the potential to convert windows, greenhouses, glass panels of smart devices, and more into energy harvesting devices, have taken another step toward becoming a reality.

A team of scientists from the Tohoku University in Japan has created a near-invisible solar cell using indium tin oxide (ITO) as a transparent electrode and tungsten disulfide (WS2) as a photoactive layer.

Remarkably, the cell has the potential to achieve a transparency of 79 percent and can help take the TMD-based near-invisible solar cells from the basics to truly industrialized stages, according to the study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The Germany based Urban Mobility GmbH has developed an heavy duty cargo bike for urban delivery services. The heavy duty UM CargoBike has a very large 2,0m³ cargo box and is classified as Pedelec25, an e-bike with a maximum speed of 25km/h. It can be operated tax-free, and without a driver’s license. Additionally, it can be used on bike lanes and some pedestrian areas. These aspects give it an enormous commercial and operational advantage compared to classic delivery trucks.

As solar grows rapidly as an energy source, the number of photovoltaic (PV) modules that are manufactured and installed each year will continue to expand. By 2050, the United States may have installed 1,600 gigawatts of PV (or more) to decarbonize its electricity system, about 20 times the amount installed today. Even before 2050, many of these PV modules may start retiring from service. What happens to those modules?

Many researchers and members of the PV industry, including researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), have begun to consider solutions to the end-of-life question for PV modules. Most envision a circular economy for PV materials in which modules (or the glass, silicon, aluminum, and other materials that compose them) are recaptured at the end of their life for reuse or recycling.
