Porsche signs 25-year solar energy deal

Apparently, solar power is hot right now.

Porsche said Monday that it plans to build and operate a solar power microgrid at its U.S. headquarters in Atlanta, reducing its annual carbon emissions by 3.2 million pounds. The news came days after Ford announced what it called the largest-ever renewable energy purchase from a utility in the U.S., to power its electricity supply in Michigan with renewable energy.

The installation of Porsche’s microgrid, an on-site electrical network that harnesses power from solar panels, will begin in September and conclude in 2023. The renewable energy project is part of a $50 million development at the Porsche Experience Center campus in Atlanta.

Australian solar park could generate hydrogen for less than $2/kg

Frontier Energy said that results from a pre-feasibility study (PFS) into its proposed Bristol Springs Solar project in Western Australia show that it has the potential to be an early mover, low-cost green hydrogen producer.

The PFS, conducted by Perth-based Xodus Group, is based on the development of a large-scale green hydrogen production facility at Bristol Springs, with power sourced from the company’s planned first stage 114 MWdc solar farm. The solar would power a 36.6 MW alkaline electrolyzer, producing an estimated 4.4 million kilograms of green hydrogen per year.

EDPR lands PPA for 200-MW solar project in California

Renewable energy giant EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) today said it has clinched a deal to sell the output of a 200-MW solar park it plans to build in the US state of California.

The company, which is the renewables arm of Portuguese utility EDP (ELI:EDP), will sell the electricity under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The name of the power off-taker was not disclosed in the press statement.

The proposed solar photovoltaic (PV) project, the name of which was not specified, will be integrated with 150 MW of battery storage capacity. The complex is due to be fully commissioned in 2024.

Feds give final approval to eastern Riverside County solar, transmission projects

The Bureau of Land Management is moving forward with renewable development in the desert this month, including issuing final construction approval for the Oberon solar project on about 2,600 acres near Interstate 10 in eastern Riverside County, and greenlighting a major transmission line from western Arizona to Blythe, California to help carry more power.

Both actions are part of a push by the Biden Administration to significantly ramp up renewables development in the southwest.

The BLM Palm Springs office on July 13 announced it had authorized a subsidiary of Intersect Power to build the 500 megawatt Oberon renewable energy project, enough to power approximately 146,000 homes and 200 megawatts of battery storage.

The Vienna International Airport is spearheading decarbonization solutions on the local level.

Flughafen Wien Group claims it would eliminate its net emissions of carbon dioxide, in which the new solar power plant, the biggest one in the country, has a major role. The company, which also operates airports in Košice in Slovakia and in Malta, said the facility in Schwechat started producing electricity.

Construction begins on largest floating solar project in the US

NJR Clean Energy Ventures (CEV) has started construction on an 8.9-MW floating solar installation in Millburn, New Jersey, that will be the largest floating array in the United States.

Using a floating racking system, 16,510 solar panels will be installed on a reservoir located at the New Jersey American Water Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant. The clean power generated by the array will provide approximately 95% of the facility’s annual power needs through a power purchase agreement with CEV.

“Floating solar technology creates new opportunities for bodies of water to be a home for large-scale renewable energy generation and bring the benefits of clean energy to even more customers,” said Steve Westhoven, president and CEO of New Jersey Resources. “As a leader in New Jersey’s solar marketplace, we look forward to working with New Jersey American Water to support their power needs and advance the state’s clean energy and climate goals.”
