Clean energy firm Intersect Power LLC announced today that it has commissioned a 500-MW solar farm, coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS), in Riverside County, California.

The 679-MWp power generating facility will produce enough electricity to meet the power demand of more than 207,000 homes annually. The solar plant is backed by a 250-MW/1-GWh co-located storage.

The Oberon Solar + Storage site spans roughly 2,600 acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It marks the first project to be completed under BLM’s Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP).

The IRA and its upstream incentives have led to a boom in manufacturing investments across clean energy including lithium-ion batteries and energy storage.

US-made battery energy storage system (BESS) DC container solutions will become cost-competitive with those from China in 2025 thanks to incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Clean Energy Associates said.

The solar and storage technical advisory firm revealed the forecast in its new quarterly BESS Price Forecasting Report for Q3 2023.

A DC BESS container fully manufactured in the US sits at an average price of US$256/kWh in 2023 for a 2024/25 delivery, while one manufactured in China for US delivery in 2025 sits at US$218/kWh, Clean Energy Associates (CEA) said. The latter includes a 10.89% Section 301 tariff for select Chinese goods.

On August 21, the City of Santa Barbara began construction on a 425 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic system and battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Granada Garage. This project will generate, store, and supply electricity to the Granada Garage, Granada Offices, and the 911 Call Center while also reducing electricity costs at the Central Library across the street.

The project will produce approximately 700,000 kWh per year of clean renewable electricity, equivalent to powering over 150 Santa Barbara homes. In addition to increasing local renewable electricity capacity, project benefits include improved regional air quality and energy reliability, and supporting the local green energy industry.

Luna Battery Storage, a 100MW/400MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in California which was the subject of a “landmark” debt finance deal, is now online and serving community choice aggregator Clean Power Alliance (CPA).

CPA has contracted for 100MW of flexible energy storage capacity for a 15-year term with AES Corporation, which owns the project and developed it through subsidiary sPower – which was later merged into the parent company, becoming AES Clean Energy.

CPA said last week that it is now receiving the clean energy capacity from the system in the City of Lancaster, Los Angeles County.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved new projects by the state’s three investor-owned utilities, including nine battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities proposed by PG&E totalling 1.6GW/6.4GWh.

The CPUC has approved the projects which were proposed by PG&E in January in response to an order to procure 11.5GW of clean energy capacity, under the CPUC’s internal resource planning process.
