A Surrey brewery has set up a subsidiary which produces beer using nothing but solar power.

The One Planet Brewing Co has been set up in Tongham, near Farnham, by the Hogs Back Brewery.

Rooftop panels provide the energy for the brewery’s equipment.

Hogs Back said it hopes to reach net zero in 2030 – a decade ahead of the rest of the industry.

One Planet’s first beer was a 5.5% brew called Hazy IPA.

“The whole beer industry is committing to get to net zero by by 2040” said Rupert Thompson, managing director of Hogs Back Brewery.

Lion-owned XXXX Brewery has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to satisfy 100% of the electricity needs for the 144-year-old XXXX brewery in Brisbane, Australia, from the AUD 130 million ($90 million) Woolooga solar farm.

The Woolooga project – under development near Gympie, Queensland, by oil giant bp’s renewables joint venture with UK solar company Lightsource – has already commenced generation. It is expected to achieve full production early this year.

Lion’s latest XXXX brand campaign asks Australians to “give a XXXX” about the world and environment, and claims the offtake agreement will see the company reach its target of 100% purchased renewable electricity by 2025 in Australia, two years ahead of schedule.

As the number of craft breweries in the U.S. continues to grow, with more than 9,000 counted in 2021 by the Brewers Association, companies are looking for ways to stand apart from the competition. One strategy gaining popularity is investing in onsite renewable energy. Many breweries use “solar-powered beer” as a marketing tool and sometimes even name certain brews after solar power, like Minnesota brewery Invictus Brewing Company’s new “1.7 Million Megawatts Summer Ale.”
