Meta Platforms Inc., the parent of social media apps including Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to buy energy from a solar project in southeast Missouri.

Arevon Energy Inc., a renewable energy company, and California-based Meta (Nasdaq: META) have reached two long-term environmental attributes purchase agreements (EAPA) for the Kelso Solar Project in Scott County, Missouri, the companies said Tuesday in a press release.

Arevon’s Kelso Solar Project will generate 349 megawatts of power to support Meta’s operations in the region with 100% renewable energy, officials said. Meta is building an $800 million data center in Kansas City, joining 21 data centers it operates worldwide. Meta expects to spend about $15.12 billion related to its renewable energy agreements as of Dec. 31, most of which is due beyond five years, the company said in its annual report.

Meta has signed a 330MW solar Environmental Attributes Purchase Agreement (EAPA) with Adapture Renewables in Arkansas and Illinois.

The social media giant will buy solar energy from three of Adapture Renewables’ solar projects that are currently under development in the two states.

The three solar projects are expected to have an economic impact of more than $400 million, creating 500 temporary jobs during construction and 25 full-time positions once operational.

Meta Platforms Inc has agreed to buy renewable energy credits and other environmental attributes associated with Vitol’s 50-MW Ocotillo Wells solar project in San Diego County, CA.

US technology conglomerate Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) has taken another step towards its goal of securing 100% of renewables for its operations by signing a multi-year contract with energy and commodities trader Vitol.

The Facebook and Instagram owner has agreed to buy renewable energy credits and other environmental attributes associated with Vitol’s 50-MW Ocotillo Wells solar project in San Diego County, California. Meta will be making these purchases in support of its operations in the region, a news release from Vitol says.

The Ocotillo Wells solar plant will benefit from a 4-hour battery energy storage system (BESS). It is expected to become operational in the summer of 2023.

Technology companies are leading the charge of companies buying wind and solar power.

Amazon, Facebook parent company Meta, and Google, owned by parent company Alphabet, are the top three corporate purchasers of wind and solar energy, according to a report published Wednesday from the American Clean Power Association, an industry group.

Amazon had contracted 12.4 gigawatts of clean wind and solar energy in the United States through September 2022, while Meta had contracted 8.7 gigawatts and Google had contracted 6.2 gigawatts, according to the report.
