Officials from the city of Brisbane and their power provider cut the ribbon on the first of twelve government buildings across San Mateo County converting to solar power.

Squinting against the afternoon sun, officials from the city of Brisbane and their power provider, Peninsula Clean Energy, cut the ribbon on the first of twelve government buildings across San Mateo County converting to solar power.

Photos were taken under photovoltaic solar panels at the city-owned event space, the Mission Blue Center, to celebrate California’s Clean Air Day.

Solar and Storage on Public Buildings is a local program endorsed by the Coalition for Clean Air, a nonprofit environmental group. It is administered by Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE), the official energy service provider for San Mateo County.

If all warehouses and superstores went solar, they could produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of 27 million households.

Solar energy in America is growing. In 2021, America produced enough solar energy to power 15 million homes – 15 times as much as we produced in 2012.

But given that solar could power our country many times over, we are still just barely scratching the surface of our solar potential. The sooner we tap that potential the better it will be for our health and our environment.

One of the best place to put the large scale solar that we’ll need is on existing rooftops. In the video below, I explain the rooftop solar potential of big box stores and warehouses.

Aptera is aiming to produce 10,000 cars by the end of this year, eventually ramping up production to 600,000 cars a year.

A year and a half ago, San Diego-based Aptera Motors started taking orders for the Aptera, its three-wheeled solar car that resembles a cross between the Batmobile, the Delorian, and a personal-size aircraft. The company quickly sold out multiple models of the car and ended up having to push back the delivery date for many customers. But in a webinar they put out last month, the company announced purchase of a factory to scale up production of their vehicles, which could mean a new era of emissions-free transport is being (slowly) ushered in.

The factory in Carlsbad, California has 200,000 square feet of production space. That’s a lot; for comparison’s sake, Tesla’s flagship factory in Fremont, California was 510,000 square feet (but has been expanded since its initial construction).
