EDF Renewables' Palen Solar site is fully operational consisting of 4 projects totaling 620 MWDC of solar and 200 MWh of energy storage.

EDF Renewables’ 620-MW California solar portfolio is completed

Solar Projects

EDF Renewables North America‘s Palen Solar site is fully operational and delivering decarbonized energy to the grid. The site consists of four projects totaling 620 MWDC of solar and 200 MWh of energy storage.

The projects, using single-axis tracking technology, are located adjacent to each other on unincorporated land in Riverside County, California, managed by the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM designated this area as a Solar Energy Zone (SEZ) and Development Focus Area, land set aside for utility-scale renewable energy development.

Porsche plans to build a solar power microgrid at its US headquarters in Atlanta, reducing its annual carbon emissions by 3.2 million pounds

Porsche signs 25-year solar energy deal

Solar Projects

Apparently, solar power is hot right now.

Porsche said Monday that it plans to build and operate a solar power microgrid at its U.S. headquarters in Atlanta, reducing its annual carbon emissions by 3.2 million pounds. The news came days after Ford announced what it called the largest-ever renewable energy purchase from a utility in the U.S., to power its electricity supply in Michigan with renewable energy.

The installation of Porsche’s microgrid, an on-site electrical network that harnesses power from solar panels, will begin in September and conclude in 2023. The renewable energy project is part of a $50 million development at the Porsche Experience Center campus in Atlanta.

Dulles solar farm would be built on more than 835 acres on land that would power the larger Northern Virginia electrical grid.

Dulles solar farm would be the nation’s largest at an airport

Solar Industry News, Solar Projects

Dulles International Airport could soon be home to the largest airport-based solar and battery development in the United States, one that at peak production could provide enough energy to power more than 37,000 Northern Virginia homes.

The solar farm would be built and managed by Dominion Energy on more than 835 acres on land. It would include a solar array capable of producing 100 megawatts of solar generation and a 50-megawatt battery storage system. The power generated would feed the larger Northern Virginia electrical grid.

Once built, Dulles would join a growing number of airports across the country looking to solar developments as a way to meet sustainability goals, save money on electricity and generate revenue from land that might otherwise be undeveloped. The project is one of dozens the Virginia utility company is building as it shifts to meet the mandates of a sweeping clean-energy law that state lawmakers passed in 2020.

230MW BESS comes online at Bureau of Land Management site in California

Solar Industry News, Solar Projects

A 230MW battery energy storage system (BESS) from NextEra Energy Resources, part of a large solar-plus-storage project, has come online in California.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which manages the land on which the 94-acre project is located in Riverside County, announced the start of commercial operations on the Desert Sunlight Battery Energy Storage System yesterday (16 August).

The 230MW BESS project adjoins the existing Desert Sunlight Solar Farm and will store renewable energy generated by the Farm and shift it to peak demand hours.

The 48-level building features a “solar skin” facade, from which it will generate energy for 20 percent of its base electrical requirements.

‘Solar skinned’ Melbourne tower approved

Solar Innovation, Solar Projects

A $1 billion development at 435 Bourke Street has been approved by the Victoria’s planning department.

Designed by Bates Smart, the 48-level building will feature a “solar skin” facade, from which it will generate energy for 20 percent of its base electrical requirements.

To be made from vertical glass photovoltaic panels, the solar skin is designed to capture sunlight and convert the energy into electricity. The innovative skin can also let natural light in, providing the same thermal and insulation capacities as architectural glass.

Washington D.C. signs 73 MW solar power purchase agreement

Solar Industry News, Solar Projects

A 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed by the Washington D.C. Public Service Commission for renewable energy to serve a target quantity of 5% of the standard offer service (SOS) electricity supply load beginning in December 2024. The agreement is the result of a pilot program to procure renewable energy through long-term PPAs for electricity generation sourced by solar and wind located in the PJM interconnection region.

The agreement, signed with developer Invenergy, covers the sale of energy, renewable energy credits, and capacity for a 15 year term. The PPA features levelized pricing for approximately 154,000 MWh of electricity per year, representing 73 MW, or 29% of Invenergy’s solar project capacity.

Maldives reopens 40MWh battery storage tender for island solar

Solar Industry News, Solar Projects

The Republic of Maldives has reopened a tender process, seeking to procure 40MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in an energy transition project supported by World Bank funding.

The South Asian island nation’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology announced the reopening this morning. Eligible bidders have been given until 1pm local time on 27 October 2022 to submit their completed bids but must register with the Maldives Ministry of Finance between 4 August and 20 October first.

Financing support has been approved from the World Bank through its Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) Project for the country and the Maldives government will apply part of that funding towards the cost of making payments to BESS providers under contract.

SJCE's program offers more than 800 customers 100% solar energy at a 20% discount, which can be combined with other monthly discounts.

San José Clean Energy’s community solar program saving some low-income customers $100 per month

Solar Projects

San José Clean Energy (SJCE) has released details of the success of its first community solar program. The program offers more than 800 customers 100% solar energy at a 20% discount, which can be combined with other monthly discounts for up to 55% savings. The average Solar Access customer is saving $32 per bill and some save over $100 each month.

The new program enables customers who rent their home, cannot afford to install solar or whose home is not suitable for solar to benefit from utility scale clean energy at a discount. SJCE sources the solar energy for customers and there is no solar panel installation or equipment required. Eligible customers can apply to be added to the program’s waitlist and as spots become available; customers will be enrolled on a first come, first served basis. Applications are accepted online, by mail or by phone at 833-432-2454.

Western Australia utility replicating success of 100% renewable energy town

Solar Projects

The small town of Onslow, Western Australia, is now powered almost entirely by renewable energy, and the utility behind that project wants to roll out the same tech across the state.

State-owned utility company Horizon Power said today that it will deploy distributed energy management system (DERMS) technology that helps coordinate the use of different resources like rooftop solar PV, battery storage and electric vehicles (EVs).

In the demonstration project at Onslow, the entire town ran on renewable energy and battery storage for a period of about an hour-and-a-half last year, thanks to a microgrid system which allowed it to operate as a self-contained electricity grid.

Ameresco, SoCal Edison ‘working around the clock’ on 2.1GWh BESS portfolio

Solar Projects

Ameresco and Southern California Edison’s (SCE’s) teams are “working around the clock,” to deliver a 2.1GWh, three-site battery storage portfolio by the end of this year, according to Ameresco’s CEO.

Energy efficiency and renewables solutions company Ameresco reported its second quarter financial results on Monday (1 August). In a conference call to discuss results, CEO and president George Sakellaris offered an update on the project with investor-owned utility SCE, one of the biggest battery storage buildouts ever contracted.

The company is currently also working on its biggest solar-plus-storage project deal to date. Ameresco has partnered with developer Bright Canyon on Kūpono Solar, which will pair 48MW of solar PV with 42MW/168MWh of batteries in O’ahu, Hawaii. The project will be connected to utility Hawaiian Electric’s (HECO’s) grid.
